Tesla Finally Unveils the Roadster That Was Due in 2020, Assuming the Wind Agrees This Time

Nearly nine years after the 2017 prototype and six years after promised first deliveries, Tesla livestreams its next-gen Roadster demo tonight from a SpaceX site in McGregor, Texas — thrusters optional, street legality not included. This satirical technology dispatch treats the longest tease in electric-car history as a halo still waiting for permission to leave PowerPoint.

Tesla Finally Unveils the Roadster That Was Due in 2020, Assuming the Wind Agrees This Time

Tesla is preparing to unveil a sports car tonight the way some people open a birthday present they wrapped in 2017: with ceremony, a livestream, and the faint hope that the thing inside still fits.

The next-generation Roadster is set for a 7:55 p.m. Central livestream from SpaceX's McGregor, Texas site — nearly nine years after the 2017 prototype and zero years after the first delivery. Production was promised for 2020. The corporate calendar has performed yoga: flexible, mostly used to stretch.

The show was first booked for October 1. On September 28 Tesla postponed it, "tracking the weather closely with local meteorologists" because it "can only be held outdoors." Elon Musk added: "Due to high winds, the new Roadster demo is postponed by 2 weeks." Only Tesla can delay a car that does not yet exist because the air was moving too fast.

In 2017 the pitch was four seats, 620 miles of range, 0-60 in 1.9 seconds, about $200,000, a Founders Series at $250,000, and $50,000 reservations that aged into a timeshare with better branding. Dates slipped through 2021–2023. Musk floated "hopefully 2024," called it "not a commitment," then moved production to 2027 or 2028. The Roadster's true innovation is chronology. An April 1, 2026 unveil date, he said, gave him "deniability." April Fool's Day as a product roadmap is either comedy or confession.

Musk redesigned the car. In 2024 he wrote that it would do 0-60 in under a second, then added, "And that is least interesting part." When the least interesting feature of a sports car is outrunning airplanes, check your brokerage account. SpaceX cold-gas thrusters are the interesting part. The demo scaled back from "flying" to a short hover. Reports say the car will be remote-operated and not street-legal — the greatest dinner of all time, served behind a velvet rope with a drone fork.

"The new Tesla Roadster is a candidate for greatest product demo of all time," Musk wrote on X. Also: "Let's just say that this demo will be a BANGER, probably metaphorically, though some chance literally." Metaphorical bangers are marketing. Literal ones are why McGregor has a blast radius. In 2023 he called it a "small potato situation" that would not "move the needle in a major way financially." It takes a special genius to brand a quarter-million-dollar halo as a potato and then book outdoor fireworks.

Morningstar's Seth Goldstein still sees a crown: "Tesla does not currently have a halo car... The Roadster will be Tesla's new halo car," expecting about 2,000 a year against 1.6 million vehicles last year. A halo that sells two thousand copies is a very expensive hat for the shareholders' meeting. Meanwhile Tesla stopped selling the Model S and X for Optimus and launched the Cybercab without a wheel, pedals, or mirrors — solving the Roadster's hardest problem by refusing to let you drive it.

The original Roadster borrowed a Lotus Elise chassis: British bones, American electric future. Tonight's car stands on its own thrusters under a SpaceX sky. Nine years after the prototype, six after the first promised deliveries, and two weeks after the weather won round one, Tesla will attempt the greatest product demo of all time. History only asks that the Roadster finally leave the PowerPoint.

Your Questions About the Nine-Year Roadster, Answered

The flying bit was scaled back to a short hover with SpaceX cold-gas thrusters. Think of it as a product launch that has discovered the difference between orbit and a very expensive jump.

Because the demo "can only be held outdoors," involves SpaceX hardware, and apparently requires a blast radius. Detroit has hotels. McGregor has thrusters.

Production is now aimed at 2027 or 2028. Your reservation has outlasted several model years, one promised delivery decade, and at least one high-wind advisory. Patience is the real Founders Series perk.
