Trump Promises Every American $5,000 If Republicans Win, Having Already Disclosed It Buys One Hamburger and a Small Dessert at Mar-a-Lago

At a Saturday rally in Perry, Georgia, President Trump renewed his promise of a $5,000 "Trump dividend" for every adult citizen if Republicans hold both chambers of Congress, money that must be spent in America and that he has already said buys one hamburger and a small dessert at Mar-a-Lago. This satirical politics dispatch reads the fine print and checks the menu.

Trump Promises Every American $5,000 If Republicans Win, Having Already Disclosed It Buys One Hamburger and a Small Dessert at Mar-a-Lago

Every campaign eventually makes a promise about money. The honest ones also tell you the exchange rate.

On Saturday night in Perry, Georgia, President Donald Trump renewed his offer of a $5,000 "Trump dividend" to every adult citizen if Republicans keep both the House and the Senate, paid from tariff revenue, on one condition: the money must be spent in the United States. A week earlier, at a rally in Dalton, he had already told Georgians what that buys at his own club: "one hamburger and a small dessert."

This is the first stimulus check in American history to arrive with its own restaurant review. "I should not say that," he added in Dalton. "It's probably true!" Most politicians get caught on a hot mic. This one brought the mic, the menu and the bill.

The rally moved to Guardian Centers in Perry from Macon, which is how campaigns treat cities: like a reservation that found a better table. Jason Aldean warmed up the crowd, and the president spoke for nearly two hours, which at Mar-a-Lago prices is roughly a burger and a half of airtime.

The arithmetic is generous the way a lottery ticket is generous. There are roughly 270 million American adults, which puts the bill north of $1 trillion. The tariffs meant to fund it took a hit when the Supreme Court struck down the sweeping ones and ordered $166 billion in refunds. Asked whether Congress would need to sign off, Trump said, "Well, we think not." Congress, which holds the purse, hears that sentence the way a wallet hears "I'll just borrow this."

Then there is the caveat. The president acted out a couple tempted to blow the windfall abroad: "You can't say, 'Darling, the president just sent us $5,000, let's take a trip to China and spend our money in China.'" It is patriotism with a receipt requirement, a gift card to an entire country. Somewhere a Treasury official is designing the first stimulus check that gets declined at the airport.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis warned the checks would mean "more debt and more inflation," which sounds like serious policy until you remember the hamburger has already priced it in.

The president also dismissed "affordability" as a word "made up by the Democrats," a bold position to take shortly after explaining that $5,000 covers lunch. Words are like dessert at a private club. If you have to ask what they cost, you were not supposed to order them.

There was real news, too. Trump announced that Audi plans a plant in middle Georgia building up to 200,000 vehicles a year, which is a lot of cars nobody can buy with a dividend already spoken for at the grill. Senate candidate Mike Collins promised to "haul the trust fund kid out of there," a line that lands differently at an event whose headline act is a trust fund for everyone.

"With these two people, it's going to boom like never before," the president said of Collins and gubernatorial nominee Rick Jackson, before closing with his signature dance. Nobody asked what the dance costs. At Mar-a-Lago, probably a side of fries.

So the offer stands: win both chambers, get $5,000, spend it at home. Economists will argue about inflation. Voters will argue about the deficit. But the man writing the check has already settled the only question that matters. If you take it to Palm Beach, order quickly. It covers one hamburger and a small dessert, and he has already told you he shouldn't have told you.

Trump Dividend FAQ: What Does $5,000 Actually Buy?

Every adult citizen, if Republicans keep both the House and the Senate. Lose either one and it becomes the most expensive hypothetical in American history.

No. The money must be spent in the United States, which rules out Paris, Tokyo and joining the revolution, but not one hamburger and a small dessert in Palm Beach.

Not according to the official menu, which the president read aloud himself. Fries appear to be a second-dividend issue.
