Apple and Meta Make Up Long Enough to Sell You a Terabyte of Feelings

Meta released Muse Spark Open, an 816-billion-parameter model it calls the most capable U.S. open-weight system to date, and the recommended home setup is two Apple M5 Ultra Mac Studios with a terabyte of memory between them. Alexandr Wang called the thaw “mommy and daddy… playing nice again.” This satirical business dispatch treats the reunion as a custody agreement with a Hugging Face download button.

Apple and Meta Make Up Long Enough to Sell You a Terabyte of Feelings

Silicon Valley has discovered couples therapy, and the co-pay is two Mac Studios.

On Thursday, Meta released Muse Spark Open, an 816-billion-parameter open-weight model it calls “the most capable US open-weight model to date,” with 42 billion parameters active at once and a context window long enough to remember every apology you typed and deleted. The recommended way to run it at home is Apple’s MLX framework on M5 Ultra Mac Studios. Apple’s unified memory, Meta explained, lets each Studio’s GPU use up to 512 GB, so two machines “behave like one supercomputer with a terabyte of unified memory.” Democracy, it turns out, requires rackmount furniture.

Mark Zuckerberg posted that the weights were releasing and that the model “runs great on new Mac Studios thanks to work with @johnternus and Apple.” John Ternus is Apple’s hardware chief, which is how you know the peace treaty was signed in aluminum, not feelings. Engadget notes that four 256 GB M5 Ultra Mac Studios would run about $38,000, a figure that redefines “open” as “open if your garage already looks like a data center.” The 512 GB Studio is still listed for “late October,” which is Cupertino for “bring money and a kneeling pillow.”

Meta AI chief Alexandr Wang, speaking to Axios about the thaw after years of corporate frost, said they were “excited for mommy and daddy to be playing nice again.” He credited former Apple executive Daniel Gross with “getting the two companies to work nicely together.” In any other industry, that sentence would end a podcast. In this one, it ships a model card.

The future, Meta’s blog insists, “is for everyone,” including the freedom to run advanced models at home. Everyone, in this dialect, is the person who already owns two Studios, a spare circuit breaker, and the emotional maturity to tell their landlord the humming is meditation. Meta says it tested on-device workflows that shipped real iOS changes to Ice Cubes, an open-source Mastodon client, and drove DaVinci Resolve end to end while the model reviewed footage frame by frame. Your homework used to be an essay. Their demo is a film editor with a union card.

Benchmarks, Meta says, beat leading Chinese open models GLM 5.3 and Kimi K3 on agentic tasks and visual reasoning, which is how geopolitics now sounds when it wants a download button. Weights are on Hugging Face and cloud gardens everywhere; inference partners include Fireworks, Groq, Together AI, and friends. The Muse Model License allows many developers to use it for free, with “limited commercial terms,” which is lawyer Latin for “please don’t become us without inviting us.”

Apple, for its part, published MLX praise about experimenting locally “in a private environment,” as if privacy were a feature you buy by the terabyte. The companies that spent years litigating each other’s App Store manners are now holding hands over memory bandwidth. Divorce lawyers hate this one trick.

Somewhere a vibe coder is staring at a $38,000 shopping cart and calling it freedom. Somewhere else mommy and daddy are playing nice again, until the next fee dispute, the next hearing, or the next time someone asks who pays for the electricity. The model remembers a million tokens. It will not remember who left the charger in the car.

Questions Nobody Asked About Running a Supercomputer in the Guest Room

The weights are free the way a yacht listing is free. You may look. Parking is extra.

One machine holds half a thought. The second holds the other half and the power bill.

Until the next App Store fee hearing. Love is temporary. Memory bandwidth is forever.
