NOAA Unveils Winter Outlook: El Nino Is Driving, the Jet Stream Is Moving to Florida, and Snow Declined to Comment

NOAA's 2026-2027 U.S. Winter Outlook says a very strong El Nino will likely shift the jet stream south and east, favoring a warmer North and a wetter South from California to Florida, while snowfall stays unforecast beyond a week. This satirical weather dispatch treats the outlook as a trailer with no release date and a jet stream that retired to Florida.

NOAA Unveils Winter Outlook: El Nino Is Driving, the Jet Stream Is Moving to Florida, and Snow Declined to Comment

Winter has released its trailer, and like every trailer, it reveals the whole plot while refusing to commit to a release date.

On Thursday, NOAA published its U.S. Winter Outlook for December 2026 through February 2027, and the headliner is a very strong El Nino. Warmer-than-average temperatures are favored across the northern U.S. Wetter-than-average conditions are likely from California to Florida and up the Eastern Seaboard. Translation: Minnesota gets a mild winter, and the South gets the water from the snow globe without the snow. Somewhere in Duluth a man is listing his parka on Marketplace. Somewhere in Tampa a man is pricing canoes.

"As we know from decades of observations, a very strong El Nino will likely bring a southward and eastward shift to the jet stream for the contiguous U.S., which tilts the odds toward stormier weather across the South," said Ken Graham, director of NOAA's National Weather Service. The jet stream, like every American retiree, is moving south and east. Unlike the retirees, it is bringing the storms with it instead of just complaining about them at brunch.

Graham added that "too much precipitation on dry soil can fuel destructive flash floods and mudslides," and that "now is the time for communities and individuals to plan ahead for the upcoming winter." Drought relief, it turns out, is like a refund from the cable company: welcome, late, and occasionally delivered through the living room. As for planning ahead, Americans traditionally do that for winter the morning after it arrives, in the bread aisle, in pajamas.

Then came the most honest sentence a federal agency has ever printed. The outlook "does not project seasonal snowfall accumulations as snow forecasts are generally not predictable more than a week in advance." Snow, like a teenager, will not share its plans beyond the weekend. Children praying for snow days must now pray in seven-day installments, like a gym trial nobody intends to keep.

Michelle L'Heureux of NOAA's Climate Prediction Center told ABC News, "This is why our seasonal forecasts are expressed in terms of probabilities." She explained that El Nino sets "preferred pathways" for weather systems, "but it is not going to tell every weather system exactly what to do and where to go." So El Nino is a substitute teacher. It makes the seating chart. It cannot stop the back row. Hawaii, much of the Southwest and the Ohio Valley were handed "equal chances" of various outcomes, which is the meteorological version of a relationship status that says "it's complicated."

NOAA also unveiled a Probabilistic Precipitation Portal showing "low-end, expected, and high-end amounts" of snow, ice and rain. Finally, a forecast formatted like a contractor's estimate. And the Weather Service will add "Particularly Dangerous Situation" wording to select Blizzard and Ice Storm Warnings, because the word "warning" alone now gets scrolled past like terms and conditions.

Florida, meanwhile, has the strongest odds of a wet winter and near-normal temperatures, which in Florida means the alligators change nothing about their wardrobe.

The next update lands November 19, when the probabilities get revised by people who are, against all odds, usually right. Until then: the North gets warm, the South gets wet, the jet stream gets a condo in Florida, and snow remains available for comment exactly seven days before it ruins your commute.

Questions You Were Afraid to Ask the Jet Stream

NOAA will let you know about a week before it happens. Until then, the snow is in witness protection.

Same reason your uncle did: better weather, a condo near the water, and a deep need to become Florida's problem.

Up North, keep it for emotional support. Down South, trade it for a raincoat and a canoe.
