Kylie Jenner Wears a $50 Million Bra Made of No Fabric, Finally Giving Victoria's Secret a Product Nobody Can Afford to Return
Kylie Jenner walked Victoria's Secret's first Los Angeles show in a $50 million Jacob & Co. Fantasy Bra built from 4,410 diamonds, 3,218 gold parts and zero fabric, the first Fantasy Bra on a runway since 2018. This satirical entertainment dispatch treats the four-pound garment, the 1,000 artisan hours and the jeweler's love letter hidden in its facets as underwear with a security detail.
The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show came to Los Angeles on Sunday and did what Los Angeles does best: it took something ordinary, removed the useful parts, and charged $50 million for what was left.
Kylie Jenner walked the runway in the Fantasy Bra, a garment that contains no fabric, which is the first time in history a bra has been described by what it isn't holding back.
Jacob & Co. built it from 4,410 natural diamonds totaling 1,373.39 carats, centered on a 75.54-carat Fancy Vivid yellow diamond. Fancy Vivid is the highest color grade a diamond can earn. It is also what everyone in the front row was by the end.
The piece weighs four pounds. Most women's bras are designed to reduce back pain. This one is designed to create it, insure it and list it with Lloyd's of London.
It is made of 3,218 individually designed components cast in 18K white gold. Ikea would ship that in four boxes, with one Allen key and a quiet sense of doom.
Fifteen artisans spent more than 1,000 hours making it. That is roughly six months of full-time work for one person, or one afternoon for anyone trying to find the hook in the back.
"I wanted to create the most expensive Fantasy Bra ever made, but value alone was never enough," said founder Jacob Arabo. That is the most jeweler sentence ever spoken. The price was not enough. It also needed to be the price.
"For me, it had to be about the diamonds, the light, and the movement," he added. Note the order. The person wearing it came in fourth, behind physics.
The brand said the moment made "fashion history all over again," which is generous, because the last Fantasy Bra walked in 2018. In fashion, eight years away is not a hiatus. It is a witness protection program.
There was romance, too. Arabo told Harper's Bazaar the proprietary Angel-cut diamonds are named after his wife, Angela, with 37 facets for 37 years of marriage. Most husbands mark an anniversary with dinner. Arabo carved his into rocks and let Kylie Jenner wear them in front of America, which is either the most romantic gesture of the decade or the most complicated.
"Each component was cleaned, filed, and pre-polished by hand," Arabo said. Somewhere a man who irons his own shirts is feeling very small.
Backstage, Jenner posted a close-up of the bra on Instagram with the caption "Best day ever." For a woman who co-founded a cosmetics empire, this is a remarkable thing to say about underwear.
Victoria's Secret, a company that sells bras in malls, now has a flagship product that cannot be washed, folded, stolen or explained to the IRS. It has never been closer to fantasy.
The economics are simple. At $50 million, the bra costs about $11,300 per diamond, or $15,500 per gold part. Nobody in the audience could afford it. Nobody in the audience could lift it.
Somewhere, a regular shopper is still hunting for a 34B on the clearance rack, wondering why hers has an underwire and no armed guards.
The show ended, the lights went down and the bra went back to wherever four-pound diamonds sleep. Kylie Jenner called it the best day ever. The insurance company called it Monday.
